Aging in Place Checklist: Making a Home Safer Room by Room

A room-by-room checklist for helping an older adult stay safe and comfortable at home.

Entry and outside

Add a sturdy handrail, bright lighting, a solid step or ramp and a lever handle. Keep walks clear of cracks and moss.

Bathroom

Install grab bars, a walk-in shower or shower seat, a handheld sprayer, non-slip surfaces and a raised toilet seat if needed.

Bedroom

Use night lights, a clear path to the bathroom, a bed at a comfortable height and a phone within reach.

Kitchen

Make everyday items reachable, add lighting under cabinets and use lever faucets and easy-grip handles.

Stairs and halls

Handrails on both sides, even treads, good lighting and no loose rugs reduce falls.

Living areas

Keep paths wide, secure cords, use firm chairs with arms and add switches that are easy to reach.

Our advice in one sentence

Start with the bathroom and the stairs, add lighting everywhere and plan changes before they are urgent.
