Stair & Railing Repair

Loose treads, wobbly railings and shaky newel posts made solid and safe again.

A stair that squeaks is annoying. A railing that wobbles is a hazard. Both come from the same cause: fasteners that loosened as the wood moved over the years. The good news is that most stairs and railings can be made solid again without rebuilding them.

We tighten and re-secure treads and risers, replace cracked parts, re-anchor newel posts and handrails to the framing and add blocking where it is missing. If a railing does not meet basic safety height and spacing, we explain what would bring it up to a safer standard.

Solid, quiet treads

Squeaks come from wood rubbing wood or loose nails. We glue and screw treads and risers from above or below, using shims and construction adhesive where the gaps are.

Railings that hold

A railing is only as strong as its anchors. We fasten posts into framing or blocking, replace loose balusters and make sure the handrail will bear a person grabbing it.

Safety details

We check baluster spacing, rail height and tread consistency. If something is out of line, we tell you honestly and show how it could be corrected.

Safety for guests and family

Stairs are where many home accidents happen. A solid rail, consistent treads and good lighting prevent most of them, and each is something a handyman can fix.

Questions

Stairs & Railings FAQ

Why does my staircase squeak?

Boards rub or nails have worked loose. Gluing and screwing the treads from above or below usually stops it.

Can a wobbly newel post be fixed?

Usually yes. It is re-anchored through the floor into blocking or framing with proper fasteners.

Can you add a handrail on the other side?

Yes. We install handrails to a comfortable height and anchor them into studs.

Do you build new railings?

Yes, in wood or metal, designed to be strong and to match your home.

Can you add lighting to a staircase?

Yes. We can install step lights or wall sconces where wiring or low-voltage power is available.
