Define the job
Write down what you need, with photos. A clear description gets a clearer estimate and shows you how well the handyman listens.
Ask about experience
Ask what similar jobs they have done and how often. A handyman who does tile all the time will do it better than one who tried it once.
Ask about requirements and coverage
Rules vary by city and county for contractors and for the size of job a handyman may take. Ask what applies and what insurance coverage they carry, and keep a record of the answer.
Get it in writing
A written estimate lists the scope, materials, timeline and payment terms. It protects both sides and prevents arguments later.
Check references and reviews
Read recent reviews and ask for a couple of references. Look for comments about punctuality, clean-up and how problems were handled.
Watch for red flags
Large upfront payments, no written estimate, pressure to decide today and a price far below others all deserve caution. A good handyman is comfortable answering questions.
Choose the handyman who listens, writes it down and is honest about what they will and will not do.
