Home Safety Checklist: Detectors, Rails, Locks and Lighting

Simple checks that make a home safer for everyone who lives in it.

Detectors

Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors monthly and replace batteries yearly. Replace the units themselves when they reach the age on their label.

Fire safety

Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and know how to use it. Clean the dryer vent and keep space around heaters and fireplaces.

Stairs and rails

Check that handrails are secure and stair treads are even. Add lighting on stairs and in halls.

Locks and entries

Rekey locks after a move, add deadbolts and check window locks and sliding door bars.

Electrical basics

Replace cracked outlets and covers, use GFCI outlets near water and do not overload power strips.

Water and gas

Know where shutoffs are and check hoses on washers and ice makers. If you smell gas, leave and call the utility.

Our advice in one sentence

Test detectors monthly and fix small hazards the day you spot them.
